Advance voting starts Monday   07/08/12 - 12:01am

With the July 31 primary election now less than a month away, voters can head to the polls as early as Monday for advance voting.

The Columbia County Board of Elections office, at 500 Faircloth Drive, Building E, of the county’s government center, is open for in-person voting from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday-Friday for the next three weeks, said Registration Coordinator Nancy Gay.

Voters will see many familiar names, some new ones and long lists of binding and nonbinding questions on each ballot.

Columbia County athletes to compete in Olympics   07/04/12 - 12:15am

Columbia County is sending two men to Olympic competition this year, both in shot put.

Former Lakeside High School and University of Georgia track and field star Reese Hoffa won the men’s shot put in the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials on June 24 and is headed to London for his third attempt at an Olympic medal.

Hoffa also competed in Athens, Greece, in the 2004 Olympics, and in Beijing, China, in the 2008 Olympics. This year’s games will be held July 27-Aug. 12, with the shot put competition and finals scheduled for Aug. 3.

Augusta Prep sends off graduates   06/06/12 - 12:09am

Along with other important dates in history, Augusta Prep’s 2012 graduates will add their commencement exercises to the list.

“June 3 is quite an exciting day,” Valedictorian Emma Hunnicutt told her classmates during graduation ceremonies Sunday afternoon.

“Today is our launching pad for greatness.”

Candidates qualify for Columbia County races   05/27/12 - 12:19am

As qualifying for 2012 elections closed Friday, several new candidates for local races emerged.

Especially crowded are two School Board races, with two challengers running in District 4 against incumbent Roxanne Whitaker, and three candidates filing to run for the vacant District 1 seat.

David Dekle, Brian Slowinski and Carolyn Chase signed up to run for the District 1 School Board seat currently held by retiring Wayne Bridges.

In District 4, Whitaker will face a challenge from newcomers Bobby Ray Strickland and Deborah Fisher.

New principals named for Brookwood, North Columbia   05/27/12 - 12:03am

Students and staffers returning to two Columbia County schools in the fall now know who’ll be in charge after the school board Tuesday approved the hiring of new principals.

Stephanie Reese is taking the helm of Brookwood Elementary, while Laura Hughes will be the new principal of North Columbia Elementary.

“It’s an honor to be recommended and an honor to be accepted,” said Reese, who served as principal at Ellen Woodside Elementary School in Greenville, S.C., for seven years. She has been an educator since 1992.

Cops looking for slow car thief   05/24/12 - 2:12pm

Columbia County investigators are looking for a car thief who took more than an hour to hot-wire and steal a car.

The owner of Omar’s Barbershop, at 3741 Washington Road in Martinez, told authorities that someone stole his car from the barbershop parking lot early Wednesday. He had left the 2007 Ford Mustang in the lot in front of the business at about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, and the car was missing when a salesperson arrived to open the business Wednesday morning.

Columbia County exhibition center construction to start in June   05/20/12 - 12:10am

Work is expected to start in early June on a new Columbia County exhibition hall near Grovetown.

Columbia County commissioners on Tuesday awarded the $7.3 million project to Augusta-based McKnight Construction Co. The more than 47,000-square-foot facility will be built behind Walmart in the Gateway Shopping Center on Horizon South Parkway near Interstate 20

Construction should start during the first week of June and is scheduled to conclude by early 2013, said county Construction and Maintenance Services Director Matt Schlachter.

June cookout to support hospitalized Columbia County elections director   05/20/12 - 12:02am

Columbia County employees are planning a cookout fundraiser for hospitalized Elections Director Deborah Marshall.

The cookout, announced Thursday morning, will be held June 8 behind the Columbia County Library in Evans and is open to the public. Hamburger or hot dog lunches will be available for $5, and additional donations will be encouraged for the Marshall family.

Reservations for plates at the cookout can be made by emailing marshallsfamfund@yahoo.com.

Elections Director Debbie Marshall still hospitalized

Elections director still hospitalized   05/06/12 - 12:06am

Columbia County Elections Director Deborah Marshall remains hospitalized since surgery April 9 for a brain tumor.

Marshall, 48, has not fully awakened since the surgery and subsequent withdrawal of a medically induced coma at the Medical College of Georgia Hospital, but each day she has been gradually more responsive, said her husband, Lee Marshall.

Doctors are awaiting further tests before recommending additional steps in battling remnants of the tumor, called a glioblastoma, Marshall said. Radiation treatment is likely, he added.
