More than 100 candidates came to Martinez Friday in the hopes of landing a teaching position with the Columbia County school system.

In these times of slashed budgets and increased class sizes, though, many left the teacher screening knowing that their job hunt must continue.

“It’s tough on these applicants,” said school system Assistant Director of Human Resources Jerilyn Northcutt. “I feel bad for these college graduates excited to go out and get their first job, and there’s none out there.”

Lakeside Middle girl charged for emulating Charlie Rape Gang   03/01/12 - 3:20pm

Columbia County authorities arrested a female Lakeside Middle School pupil Wednesday after she emulated the Charlie Rape Gang.

The 12-year-old girl was caught “dry-humping” several classmates in hallways and a classroom while shouting “CRG,” the initials for the Charlie Rape Gang, according to a sheriff’s office report.

Understanding her place in the world means more to Evans High School senior Helen Xiang than having fun.

Currently, Xiang’s place is as her school’s STAR Student after scoring a 2290 on the SAT and placing in the top 10 percent of her class.

Though a future scientist, an accomplished musician and a gifted writer – she scored a perfect 800 on the essay portion of the SAT – Xiang chose as STAR Teacher Lynn Pagano, a government and sociology instructor.

Pagano, said Xiang, opened her eyes to the troubles faced by many throughout the world.

Permissive transfers down in area schools   02/29/12 - 2:59am

About 50 Columbia County pupils will take advantage of “permissive transfers” next school year.

A state-mandated program implemented three years ago, permissive transfers allows pupils to attend other schools within their systems, but out of their zones, so long as space is available.

The number of pupils using permissive transfers for next school year dropped from 87 this year to 51.

The majority of the requests, 15, were to attend Lewiston Elementary School, which had 59 available slots.

Five Lakeside Middle School pupils calling themselves the Charlie Rape Gang will appear in Columbia County Juvenile Court this morning to answer charges of simple battery, school officials said Tuesday.

Superintendent Charles Nagle said Columbia County sheriff’s investigators met with the boys, their parents and school officials at Lakeside Middle Tuesday to inform them of the charges and the court appearance.

Columbia County sheriff’s Capt. Steve Morris said he couldn’t confirm the charges until after the hearing.

Though relatively calm in recent months, episodes of violence against teachers by special-needs pupils seemed to spike last school year.

Incident reports from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office noted at least six such pupil-on-teacher violent episodes dating back to December 2009:

• At Greenbrier Middle in December 2010, a special-needs pupil grabbed a teacher by the hair and pulled her across a classroom floor while punching and kicking her.

Brousseau wins Prep STAR Student title   02/27/12 - 1:46pm

Scholar, musician, athlete and activist all describe Augusta Preparatory Day School senior Erin Brousseau.

Now, the 18-year-old can add STAR Student to her list.

Brousseau earned the honor by notching the school’s highest SAT score, 2270, for this year and ranking in the top 10 percent of her class.

“Erin is the reason programs like STAR Student exist,” said Augusta Prep math teacher Tim Shafer. “Erin not only earned that recognition, she deserves it. Students like her should be recognized for their accomplishments.”

New fees instituted at Animal Services   02/27/12 - 11:44am

Columbia County officials recently increased the fees to residents who surrender their pets to Animal Services.

Commission members approved an ordinance change Tuesday that allows Animal Services to now charge $30 for the initial pet surrendered and $10 for subsequent pets. Previously, pet owners were charged $25 for the first pet and $5 for subsequent pets.

Pet owners will now need to show proof of vaccinations before releasing animals to Animal Services.

Evans Towne Center Park might get its own Web site this week.

Columbia County Community and Leisure Services Director Barry Smith said he soon hopes to launch www.evanstownecenterpark.com.

Visitors to the site can take a virtual tour of the park, review park information and rules, read information on other county venues, see a calendar of events, and peruse a photo gallery of past events.

For concert promoters, the Web site will contain rental and technical information on the Lady Antebellum Pavilion and other county venues, Smith said.

Soon after Jim March arrived as the new assistant chief for the Harlem Department of Public Safety, he experienced a culture shock.

“I was at an accident and people out there were bringing me hot cocoa,” March recalled. “They wanted to make sure I was OK.

“I like that feeling of being part of a community.”

March, 45, said he never experienced that kind of connection with the public during his stints with the sheriff’s offices in Columbia and Richmond counties.
