Columbia County commissioners appointed new board members to the Columbia County Convention and Visitors Bureau on Tuesday.

Those members are Surinderjit Singh, Ken Shah, Chris Noah, Jennifer Miller, Aubrey Nesbitt and Laurie Vanover.

Singh, Shah, Vanover and Nesbitt belonged to the former CVB board, which disbanded last month following complaints that the 12-person group was too unwieldy. All other members are new, said CVB Interim Director Shelly Clark.

Property owners in Columbia County might soon get another tax cut.

County officials intend to discuss the possibility of lowering the property tax millage rate at 8 a.m. Tuesday during a budget committee meeting in the auditorium of the Evans Government Center on Ronald Reagan Drive.

Commissioners discussed lowering the millage rate last week, but offered few details.

Two Appling parks soon will get some upgrades.

Columbia County commissioners authorized nearly $100,000 in improvements at the Eubank Blanchard Community Center and the Lonnie Morris Sr. Park during a Tuesday meeting.

Eubank Blanchard Community Center, 6868 Cobbham Road, will get a quarter-mile asphalt track, a picnic pavilion, irrigation system, fence for the ball field, repainted basketball court and additional improvements worth more than $72,000.

Columbia County’s sheriff says despite the price tag, a sophisticated new radio system will make his office and others more efficient and responsive for years to come.

Sheriff Clay Whittle said the 800 megahertz phase II trunked radio system from Motorola, which commissioners recently approved at a $7 million price tag, will greatly improve the communications capabilities of the sheriff’s office.

The new system upgrades to digital technology, replacing the antiquated VHF system currently used by deputies and other emergency responders.

Lakeside fight results in student arrest   05/04/12 - 12:40pm

A fight at Lakeside High School Thursday resulted in the arrest of a student.

Columbia County authorities charged Dewoyne Lyn Oliver Lewis, 19, of the 400 block of Old Evans Road in Evans, with simple battery.

As a classmate walked away from Lewis following a “heated argument” and some alleged shoving in a hallway at about 3 p.m., Lewis “ran up behind him and punched him in the face,” according to a sheriff’s office report.

Following the punch, the victim told deputies that he fell to ground and doesn’t remember what came after.

Sexual predators of children in Georgia no longer can wait out their crimes to avoid legal consequences.

Gov. Nathan Deal signed into law Wednesday a bill that removes the statute of limitations on crimes committed by sexual predators of children.

Rep. Ben Harbin sponsored the bill and made the announcement that it now is law during a Thursday breakfast meeting sponsored by the Columbia County Chamber of Commerce.

Georgia Sen. Bill Jackson said Thursday that he intends to run for re-election.

The announcement came during a Columbia County Chamber of Commerce breakfast meeting, which hosted the county’s state legislative delegation to discuss the recent legislative session.

Jackson, a Republican from Appling, represents District 24, which includes Columbia, Lincoln, Elbert, Glascock, McDuffie, Warren and Wilkes counties.

Columbia County officials again are considering a cut to property taxes.

Commissioners discussed lowering the millage rate during a Tuesday meeting, but offered few details. They said they’ll discuss the cut further in another budget meeting scheduled for May 8.

The current millage rate for Columbia County government is 9.137, which is a quarter less than the previous year following a commission cut. Commissioners have cut the county’s millage rate in four of the past five years.

One mill represents about $4 million in property tax revenues.

Warnings to be added on hazardous roads   06/27/12 - 4:30pm

Four dangerous roads in Columbia County soon should get some added signs warning motorists of the potential hazards.

County commissioners voted Tuesday to add flashing signs near three intersections and a sharp curve.

Intersections receiving overhead warning beacons are Ray Owens and White Oak roads, William Few Parkway at Chamblin Road, and Harlem Grovetown and Louisville roads. A curve on South Old Belair Road near the intersection on South Belair Road will get a road-mounted warning beacon.
