New fees set for county planning services   06/24/12 - 12:09am

Columbia County commissioners Tuesday tentatively set new fees for several services offered by Planning and Engineering.

The new fees primarily affect builders.

Fees include $150 for a final plat; $615 for a major revision to a planned unit development, general rezonings, variances and variations; $880 for some rezonings; and $10 to get a CD or DVD on zoning information.

It was the first time in more than 30 years that county officials revised such fees, said Planning and Engineering Services Director Richard Harmon.

CVB reaches full board membership   06/24/12 - 12:05am

Area banker Rick Crawford last week officially rejoined the new board of directors for the Columbia County Convention and Visitors Bureau, while the remaining CVB staffer resigned.

County commission Chairman Ron Cross named Crawford to the board, and fellow commissioners confirmed that selection during a Tuesday meeting.

As work progresses on Columbia County’s broadband network, officials have hired an international firm to help them sell it.

Commissioners recently approved the development of a business plan by Jacobs Telecommunications, a global engineering firm with Georgia offices in Atlanta and Columbus, for $97,000.

The plan will include a strategy for customer acquisition; a model for financial management; a market analysis of services needed by homes and businesses; a portfolio for services and rates; and revenue forecasts, according to county documents.

Moratorium issued on Columbia County rezonings   06/19/12 - 7:04pm

Columbia County commissioners approved a month-long moratorium Tuesday on nearly all rezonings.

Officials wanted the moratorium on non-residential rezonings while they clean-up language in ordinances regarding the uses allowed in some zoning districts.

Currently, county Planning and Engineering Services Director Richard Harmon noted, someone could build a slaughterhouse or rock quarry in the Evans Town Center area.

Obviously, Harmon said, such businesses don’t belong in that area.

Columbia County Republican Party Chairman Brian Slowinski recently resigned his post.

Slowinski, a Martinez resident, said in an email that he gave his resignation letter to party Vice Chair Dewey Galeas to read Tuesday at an executive board meeting.

A candidate for the District 1 seat on the Columbia County Board of Education, Slowinski said he resigned to focus on his election and allow other party officials to focus on other races.

Current District 1 incumbent Wayne Bridges chose not to seek re-election.

Some Greenbrier gluers pay restitution   06/18/12 - 1:41pm

At least three of the four girls involved in a scheme to squirt super glue into the door locks at Greenbrier High School have paid restitution, said a Columbia County school board member.

School trustee Mike Sleeper said in a text message last week that three of the girls paid their share of the more than $5,000 cost to repair the locks. He was unsure who had paid restitution or if the fourth teen had yet contributed.

School board buys land for new N. Columbia Elementary   06/17/12 - 12:10am

The Columbia County school board agreed to purchase land Tuesday in Evans to become the site of a new North Columbia Elementary School.

The board approved the $584,000 purchase of 26 acres on William Few Parkway between Washington and Columbia roads for the school, even though construction likely won’t start for at least three years.

“Anytime we can get land in this county we need to do it,” Superintendent Charles Nagle said following the Tuesday board meeting.

The school currently is located on 13 acres on Ray Owens Road in Appling.

Columbia County authorities arrested on Thursday one of two men they believe are connected to the Monday shooting of an Evans man.

Robert Donnell Hobbs, 19, of Old Evans Road in Martinez, was arrested on suspicion of armed robbery, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and aggravated assault for the shooting of Julian Derrick Bell outside his home on Evans to Locks Road, said Columbia County sheriff’s Capt. Steve Morris.

Evans teen arrested for rape, molestation   06/13/12 - 5:08pm

Columbia County authorities arrested an Evans teen Tuesday on charges of rape and aggravated child molestation.

The arrest of Blake Davis Weems, 17, of the 4100 block of Quinn Drive, occurred after a 13-year-old girl told her parents that he raped and molested her. The parents then called the sheriff’s office.

The girl said Weems forced her to have sex and commit other sex acts with him, according to a sheriff’s office report.

Weems is being held without bond at the Columbia County Detention Center.
