Park puts out welcome mat for parties   03/17/13 - 12:13am

Birthday-party planning just got a little easier for those who want to enjoy the outdoors.

Mistletoe State Park in Appling will begin hosting birthday parties beginning in April. The park will unveil its “Get Out & Play: It’s a Birthday Party” on April 6 from 2-4 p.m. Admission is free with the $5 park pass.

Guests will meet the park mascot, play carnival games, enjoy nature hikes, experience geocaching and participate in scavenger hunts, said program assistant Brenda Bettross.

Hellebores grow good enough to share   03/10/13 - 1:11am

Carol Finch doesn’t remember when or why she planted her first Hellebores, but over the years the plant has become one of her favorites and one she enjoys sharing with others.

“They’re very easy to grow,” said the Evans resident. “I have absolutely horrible soil and they do pretty well for me.”

The plants begin blooming in February and March, with the blossoms lasting for several weeks. Finch has Hellebores in purple, pink and white blooming varieties. After they bloom, the plants turn into a beautiful green plant in the garden.

Potter helps provide wares for fundraiser   03/06/13 - 1:29pm

 

David Stuart has long helped create bowls for the Empty Bowl project, and now he helps students, parents and staff at a local school make bowls for the annual fundraiser.

“I always thought it was a pretty neat idea,” said Stuart, the art teacher at Stevens Creek Elementary School, of the Empty Bowl program.

“It started with a group of potters who got together and solicited restaurants. When people came in, they got a bowl of their own to use and take home with them. It’s a program that is held all over the country.”

In her two years as president of the Augusta Council of Garden Clubs, Grovetown resident Judy Kirkland has seen her mission of “growing a gardener” come to fruition with the offering of several programs.

“My theme for the past two years was ‘Grow a Gardener: Educate, Mentor, Befriend,’ ” said Kirkland. “In that respect, I worked very hard to provide educational programs open to the public.

Popular program opens waiting list   02/24/13 - 1:08am

Ruth Mead has been so encouraged by the response to the area’s first Georgia Master Naturalist Program that she is putting people on a waiting list for the next class.

“We tried to offer the program last year, but it took more work than I thought and I didn’t get enough interest from field-trip leaders in time to get a class together,” said Mead, senior education specialist at the Southeastern Natural Science Academy at Phinizy Swamp Nature Park and a Georgia master naturalist. “So I began planning this year’s program back in September.”

Big saw works best on pampas grass   02/17/13 - 1:18am

Harlem resident Tom Blalock doesn’t have any special method for pruning back his pampas grass, but recently he put three methods to the test to see which one would provide the best results.

“I usually just get out my long-handled bypass garden shears and cut it off a few inches from the ground,” said Blalock. “My wife, Ann, says to use a chain saw and burn the stubble after cutting it about 6 to 8 inches high. This removes the excess dead material. We’ll have to see who has the best idea, but I don’t think I’ll see her using the chain saw. Maybe she can use an electric saw.”

Alzheimer's advocates will train for Atlanta trip   02/10/13 - 1:00am

As an advocate for Alzheimer’s awareness, Kathy Tuckey is passionate about her job as program director of the Alzheimer’s Association/Georgia Chapter.

The chapter oversees programs for a 17-county region, and in preparation for Alzheimer’s Awareness Day in Atlanta on Feb. 27, the office will hold two advocacy training sessions to discuss the issues facing those with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers.

Residents who attend Alzheimer’s Awareness Day at the state Capitol can then take those issues to their legislators.

Wild items will be on Mistletoe menu   02/03/13 - 1:08am

In the five years that Mistletoe State Park has held its wild gourmet dinner, participants have always had a good time.

Marilyn Grau, a park volunteer who is one of three organizers of the event, said the dinners are held quarterly and have seen as many as 20 participants.

“We had our first wild gourmet dinner in January 2007 and Sheryl Silva, Cathy Black and myself have been consistently involved,” she said. “Others come and go. We never know how many to expect. We might have three guests or 20; five to 10 is the norm.”

Event will showcase programs for children   01/30/13 - 1:17am

The Evans Chapter of MOMS Club International will hold its fifth annual Preschool and Mom’s Morning Out Fair this weekend.

Slated for Saturday, Feb. 2, from 10 a.m. until noon, the event will be held at the Augusta Christian Schools gymnasium and will feature representatives from area preschool and Mothers Morning Out programs.

“We hope that having several preschools and Mother’s Morning Out programs available in one central location will be beneficial to parents who are out searching for either,” said Jessica Moore, president of the Evans MOMS Club.

Farmers market coming to Evans   01/27/13 - 1:10am

Organic and sustainable gardening is growing by leaps and bounds nationally, and a local group dedicated to the popular practice is bringing a farmers market to Columbia County.

The Evans Towne Farmers Market will begin offering fresh produce, eggs, meat, dairy, nut and bread products on March 7 at the Columbia County Library in Evans. Market sponsor Augusta Locally Grown is asking farmers, gardeners, artisans, sponsors and performers to contact them.
