To one local organization, gardening isn’t about a single week each year, but rather about collective efforts to improve the community.

While the calendar points to June 2-8 as National Garden Week, the Augusta Council of Garden Clubs works year-round to be good stewards of the community by participating in projects throughout the CSRA.

“Gardeners have a passion for nurturing the beauty and resources of the earth through the planting of seeds, the care of all plants and the riches of their efforts,” notes a National Garden Week proclamation.

Sunburn and pesky bugs are among the bothers when it comes to working in the yard. Wearing a hat and applying sunscreen and an insect repellent are some of the ways to stay safe while gardening.

Area gardeners recently shared their not-so-top-secret ways on keeping themselves protected while enjoying a favorite pastime.

“I usually find the oldest, most raggedy T-shirts and pants and a pair of gloves,” said Judy Kirkland, immediate past president of the Augusta Council of Garden Clubs.

The National Fire Protection Association estimates that gas and charcoal grill accidents cause $29.8 million in property loss each year.

Loss of property – and in some cases, loss of life – can turn an otherwise happy time of fellowship and celebration into one of sadness and sorrow. However, knowing how to properly operate the grill can literally mean the difference between life and death.

“The fact is most people just make mistakes,” said Greig McCully, owner of Fireside Outdoor Kitchens and Grills in Augusta.

The annual Symphony Orchestra Augusta’s Pops! Under the Stars will return to Evans Towne Center Park on Saturday, the second year the concert has been held at Lady Antebellum Pavilion.

Gates open at 4 p.m., with an instrument “petting zoo” in which children can see various musical instruments. The orchestra will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free, with tickets for a VIP table for six people available for $250. VIP privileges include wine and finger foods.
