Woman struck by vehicle in Martinez

Developing: Pedestrian struck on Old Evans Road in Martinez   01/29/13 - 5:24pm

Traffic was snarled Tuesday afternoon on Old Evans Road at Connor Drive after a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle.


The adult female was taken to an area hospital by Gold Cross EMS.


The incident is under investigation by the Columbia County Sheriff's Office.

Bicyclist struck by vehicle on Furys Ferry Road   01/07/13 - 5:55pm

An air ambulance was called Monday afternoon to Furys Ferry Road just across the South Carolina state line after a bicyclist was struck by a vehicle.

The adult male bicyclist, whose name has not yet been released, was awake and talking to emergency responders when he was stabilized on the roadside by Gold Cross EMS and Columbia County Fire Rescue workers, along with responders from McCormick County.

Evans house fire results in fatality   11/03/12 - 10:15am

A woman pulled from a burning home died Friday night.

Agatha Murphy, 79, died at the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at  11:07 p.m. Friday night from complications of smoke inhalation, according to Harriett Garrison, Columbia County deputy coroner.

Truck crashed, rolled over on I-20

Three injured in Friday morning Interstate 20 crash   10/26/12 - 10:31am

Three people were sent to the hospital Friday morning after a crash on Interstate 20 near Belair Road.

Just after 9 a.m., Matthew Lee Moore, 25, of Grovetown, pulled his Chevrolet truck over into the eastbound, inside median to resecure the load in the back of the truck. He was attempting to merge back into traffic when the truck was rear-ended by a GMC pickup, driven by David Osborn, 34, of Hephzibah, according to Columbia County sheriff's Deputy Mike Miller.

Several plead not guilty in Columbia County   09/21/12 - 4:54pm

Several people charged with felonies in Columbia County pled not guilty at at arraignment hearing Friday.

Ted Howard Screws Jr., 44, pled not guilty to armed robbery and having a hoax device. Authorities say Screws, of Martinez, walked into First Bank of Georgia on Furys Ferry Road on June 28 and handed the teller a note and a homemade device.

Screws left with an undisclosed amount of money, but was later located and arrested. The device was a fake pipe bomb.

Grovetown officials study investigation of public safety staffer   04/10/12 - 8:55am

Grovetown officials decided at a Monday meeting to take more time to review an investigation into allegations of misconduct by a city employee.

In late March, the city council hired a private investigator to conduct the probe of a city Department of Public Safety employee who has not been publicly identified.

After a three-hour closed session at the monthly council meeting, Mayor George James said that he and the City Council members will take two weeks to review the lengthy findings of the investigation.

Murder trial continues

Testimony in the murder trial of Thomas Eugene Bradford Wednesday afternoon came from Bradford himself, as Columbia County Sheriff's Office investigators showed jurors their taped interview with the man accused of shooting water utility worker Raymond C. Lee on April 1, 2011.

The prosecution rested in the case at the conclusion of the taped interview. The defense is scheduled to begin presenting its case at 9 a.m. Thursday.

Schmidt and attorney listen to jury instructions

Schmidt guilty on all counts in murder case   02/10/12 - 12:11pm

Aaron Schmidt has been found guilty on all counts in the Jan. 31, 2011, death of his 14-year-old Harlem neighbor, Alana Calahan.

After about three hourse of deliberations, jurors returned to the courtroom of Superior Court Judge Michael Annis and rendered their decision on charges of murder, theft by taking and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime against Schmidt, 15, of Miles Road.

At the request of the defense, sentencing will be delayed to gather mitigating evidence for presentation at the hearing.
