More residents in Columbia County are trying out house watches before leaving for vacation than in years past.

This year, the county has completed 65,913 checks – up more than 8,000 from 2010.

“There are more homes and it’s just more popular,” said Columbia County sheriff’s Capt. Steve Morris.

The free year-round service started in the county 15 years ago and was designed to give homeowners more peace of mind while on vacation. Morris said Christmas and summertime are always higher, but numbers increase almost every year.

Martinez motorcyclist killed in Sunday wreck   11/14/11 - 11:01am

A man killed Sunday evening in a motorcycle wreck has been identified as Russell Casey Boyles of Martinez.

According to Richmond County Deputy Coroner Johnny McDonald, Boyles, 24, was traveling east on Skinner Mill Road about 8:30 p.m. when his 2007 Suzuki motorcycle crossed the double yellow line and struck a 2011 Toyota Camry.

The motorcycle then hit a sound barrier wall on the right shoulder of the road.

Boyles was ejected from the motorcycle and died of blunt force trauma.

The driver of the Camry was not injured.

Power expected to be restored by noon after Thursday storm   10/14/11 - 9:46am

Some area residents are still without power today after a storm swept through the region Thursday afternoon.

The majority of the homes without power are in Columbia County.

Georgia Power Spokesman Mark Williams said crews are working to restore power to more than 200 residences in Evans.

At 9 a.m. there were still 78 outages in Thomson and 68 in Augusta.

Williams said he hopes power will be restored by lunchtime.

In Aiken County, South Carolina Electric and Gas is only reporting two outages.
