Planning commission OK's rezonings, final subdivision layouts   02/13/13 - 1:06am

Columbia County planning commissioners on Thursday approved final plats that will bring 146 new residences to the county and approved rezonings that will allow two Evans homes to become offices.

Single-family home layouts for Brookhaven at Crawford Creek, Hilton at Riverwood, Blackstone on Point Comfort Road and Indian Springs on Chamblin Road received final plat approval by unanimous vote. Commissioner Jim Cox was absent.

Commissioners also approved plans for Muir Court, a five-duplex development off Owens Road.

Juvenile gets probation in teen's shooting death   02/10/13 - 1:06am

A 14-year-old Grovetown boy who shot and killed a 13-year-old girl on Halloween was sentenced to two years’ probation Friday morning in Columbia County Juvenile Court.

In addition, Christian Neibel must undergo continued counseling and attend the juvenile court’s class on decision-making, as sentenced by Judge Doug Flanagan.

Juvenile Court prosecutor Rodney Brown, who had recommended 18 months’ probation, said the shooting of Kristen Burnette, 13, was accidental.

Commissioners approve office renovations   02/10/13 - 1:05am

Job-hunters will find easier access and county commissioners will get more elbow room after a half-million-dollar renovation of a Columbia County government building.

Commissioners on Tuesday accepted the $535,030 bid from S.D. Clifton Construction Inc. of Evans for renovation of Building B, in the Evans Government Center.

“Hometown contractor, hometown business, hometown office,” said District 3 Commissioner Charles Allen after commissioners unanimously approved the Clifton’s bid.

Projects will ease William Few Parkway traffic   02/07/13 - 10:21am

 


Both ends of William Few Parkway soon will be getting a facelift.


Columbia County officials are finalizing plans for installing a traffic signal on William Few at Lewiston Road, improving the intersection at Chamblin Road, and gearing up for major construction to extend William Few north to meet Hardy McManus Road.


 


Lewiston


The first activity motorists will see is at the frequently gridlocked Lewiston-William Few intersection, said Columbia County Construction and Maintenance Division Director Matt Schlachter.

Why no clamor for guns on buses?   02/06/13 - 1:00am

Unless I’ve missed something, there doesn’t seem to have been a call to give pistols to school bus drivers.

Charles Poland Jr., the bus driver shot to death by Jimmy Lee Dykes in Midland City, Ala., didn’t have a gun. Instead, he blocked the door when Dykes stepped onto the bus Jan. 29 and demanded to be given a couple of children.

Dykes shot and killed the unarmed Poland, and then snatched a 5-year-old boy and ran to an underground bunker. On Monday the cops stormed in, killed Dykes and rescued the boy.

Thank God for a good outcome.

In tiff with Augusta, I'm betting on Gold Cross   02/03/13 - 1:02am

There’s no way of knowing what Augusta’s commission will decide to do next week with their ambulance service contract, but I get the impression some of them don’t have a clue who they’re messing with.

Gold Cross Emergency Medical has the contract for city ambulance service, just as it does for service with Columbia County and Jefferson County.

Elections board reviewing director applications   02/03/13 - 1:02am

Members of the Columbia County Board of Elections met Wednesday to begin wading through the applications for the vacant elections director’s position.

There were 45 applications for the post turned in by the Jan. 25 deadline, said Board Chairman Larry Long. The position opened after the retirement at the end of the year of Deborah Marshall, who was unable to return to work after April surgery on a malignant brain tumor.

The process of vetting all those applications will be slow, Long said.

Gold Cross employees will buy the company   02/03/13 - 1:04am

Gold Cross Emergency Medical Service is being sold, but its new owners are already in the building.

Bo Pounds is selling his privately owned ambulance service to the company’s 270 employees, a process that will take 10 years.

“Most of it, I’m giving to them,” said Pounds in a Wednesday interview. “I just really wanted to take care of the employees.”

News of the sale went public earlier in the week when Gold Cross Chief Financial Officer Frank Lindley was quoted in a story in The Augusta Chronicle that “the firm might soon be sold.”

UPDATE: Broken water line repaired in Evans   01/30/13 - 5:43pm

 


A water main break that left a Columbia County school and nearby neighborhood dry for much of the day has been repaired and water service restored.


A PVC water line on Evans-to-Locks Road feeding into The Abbeys neighborhood ruptured this morning, said Columbia County Water Utility Operations Manager Mark Inglett.


To repair the line, crews had had to shut off water to Stevens Creek Elementary and to The Abbeys, Inglett said.


“We had to isolate a larger area in order to focus on the feed line going into The Abbeys,” he said.

Nagle receives Chamber award   02/03/13 - 1:02am

As Columbia County school Superintendent Charles Nagle heads toward retirement in June, he’s added another prize to his trophy case.

The Columbia County Chamber of Commerce presented Nagle with its annual Lifetime Achievement Award during the organization’s banquet Tuesday.

The award follows Nagle’s recent reception of the Bill Barr Lead­ership Award, the highest honor from the Georgia School Superintendents Association.

“I cannot begin to tell you … what it has meant to be a part of such great things in Columbia County,” Nagle said in accepting the chamber award.
