Kacee Camp just completed her final season for the Augusta State University softball team, and the former Harlem Bulldog went out in style. She earned First Team All-Peach Belt Conference honors after hitting .390 and leading ASU to a fourth consecutive NCAA Southeast Regional.

In addition to the team’s run, Camp was also named All-Southeast Region for a fourth consecutive year. Camp had four homers, three triples, 13 doubles, scored 35 runs, drove in 27 runs, and was sensational defensively at shortstop.

Former Greenbrier High School and Georgia Tech standout Brandon Cumpton has made a nice transition to professional baseball. Cumpton helped guide Greenbrier to state titles in 2006 and again in 2007 before he moved on to play for the Yellow Jackets. He was a ninth-round selection by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2010 after three seasons at Tech.

Greenbrier High School’s baseball team is riding high. The Wolfpack (28-2)
are ranked No. 1 in the state and have also won 20 games in a row after sweeping perennial power Marist in two consecutive games in the Class AAAA state quarterfinals.

On Monday, Greenbrier plays host to Whitewater in the final four as it tries to move one step closer to their amazing sixth state championship. The first game is set for 5 p.m., and Greenbrier officials are asking all former Greenbrier athletes to attend the game.

I did not know Jonathan Hartman. I knew he was an athlete and solid student at Harlem High School, but I had never met the young man. I now realize that not knowing him was my loss.

I know that because in the wake of his death following a one-vehicle wreck, I have had a chance to hear from the people who did know him. There is always an outpouring of love when we lose a young person, but this has been different. This was genuine heartache from people who truly loved Johnny. People were expressing admiration for a young man who everyone seemed to think the world of.
