Bridget Lyons is no stranger to personal achievement. She graduated from Greenbrier High in the top 5 percent of her class and was a Georgia Certificate of Merit winner. She also parlayed her incredible talent for distance running into an athletic scholarship to the University of Georgia.

Softball star Jessica Mendoza will hold Greenbrier clinic   02/22/12 - 3:54am

For softball fans, the name Jessica Mendoza is very familiar.

From 1999-2002, Mendoza roamed the outfield for Stanford, where she was named a four-time first team All-American. She is only the fifth player in NCAA history to accomplish that feat. Mendoza also rewrote the Stanford record books, establishing the career mark for batting average, hits, doubles, home runs, slugging percentage, runs scored and stolen bases.

Camp has impressive start to final season   02/15/12 - 6:00am

Former Harlem High School star Kacee Camp has enjoyed a brilliant college softball career at Augusta State University. She burst onto the scene as a freshman four years ago by leading the Peach Belt Conference in hitting en route to the league’s Freshman of the Year award. She has been piling up great numbers ever since.

Camp is now a senior for the Diamond Jags and has a chance to establish herself as one of Augusta State’s all-time great players. If opening weekend is any indication, that is exactly what she plans to do.

College baseball begins with help from local players   02/12/12 - 5:45am

It is hard to believe baseball season is already here, but for college teams around the country it is. That includes the USC Aiken Pacers, a team that features several Columbia County natives on the roster.

USC Aiken is off to a 4-0 start as is the local contingent.

Last weekend, the Pacers swept Lincoln Memorial in a three-game series and moved in to the national Top 30. The Pacers opened the season with a 15-3 pasting of Lincoln Memorial.

Today is college football’s National Signing Day. In our era of 24-hour news cycles, sports talk radio and the World Wide Web, Signing Day has become almost as big as the actual games themselves.

In big-time college football there is a feeding frenzy among the powerhouse schools to secure the nation’s top high school talent. In today’s college football, a couple of poor recruiting classes could cost a coach his job.

Among the big programs today, recruiting is as cutthroat as it gets. Recruiters will do almost anything to get the signature of the country’s premier talent.

Peach Belt schools helped by Columbia County players   01/25/12 - 5:27am

I recently previewed the large group of Columbia County baseball players who will be playing for Augusta State and USC Aiken, but those are not the only schools that will feature players from this county. The biggest Columbia County impact might be felt at Francis Marion.

The Patriots are ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in the nation in virtually every preseason Division II poll. Last season, they went 41-16 and came within a run of making the DII World Series. A pair of freshmen from Columbia County were keys to that success.

Four Columbia County players receive sports honors   01/22/12 - 6:15am

Wednesday night, 26 area football standouts were invited to Augusta’s downtown Marriott to be part of WJBF News Channel 6’s Football Awards Show. This is not just any award show. WJBF partners with ESPN HS to put on the event, which was televised live in prime time.

ESPN college football analyst Danny Kanell served as guest speaker. Kanell, a former ACC Player of the Year as a quarterback at Florida State, not only spoke, he also co-hosted the awards portion of the evening with WJBF Sports Director Chris Kane.

• Greenbrier High School’s boys opened the season 1-6. With the graduation of three players who were four-year contributors on the varsity program, those struggles were somewhat expected.

Grovetown High School head girls basketball coach Jamie Echols has wasted little time in building a winning program.

Last year, in just the school’s second year of existence, the Lady Warriors rode star center Ebony Wells to an impressive 25-3 record. There are plenty of programs that have been around for decades that never had a 25-win season, but Grovetown needed just two seasons to pull off the feat. However, many felt with the graduation of Wells, now at Florida State, Grovetown might have a much tougher time this season.

To many, the college football season comes to an end Monday evening as LSU squares off with Alabama for the BCS national title.

However, to an ever-growing group of hard-core fans, the season still has a few weeks to go. To them, one of the biggest days on the calendar takes place Feb. 1. That is the day when the top high school football players across the country make their college choices official.
