Spring sports saw lots of standouts   06/12/13 - 12:03am

Instead of focusing on the turmoil that has dominated recent sports discussions in the county, I decided to write about all the great achievements our kids racked up this spring. Usually, this time of year in Columbia County, when we are celebrating sports success it has do to with one of our baseball teams. Though Greenbrier made a tremendous run on the diamond, the county also boasted a wealth of talented soccer, tennis, golf, and track and field accomplishments.

Few tributes can capture Amerson's spirit   06/09/13 - 12:04am

Back in 2006, I wrote a column about a gentleman named Ed Amerson. Usually, my columns consist of stories about the exploits of high school or college athletes. However, that story was very different.

My objective was to try and convey to the readers just how important “Mr. Ed” was to Greenbrier High School. Back then I was very proud of the column. When I hit “send” on my keyboard to send the column, I was thoroughly satisfied with my effort. I realize now that I actually failed that day.

To say former Greenbrier High School standouts Ben Morgan and T.D. Davis were leaders for the Georgia Southern University baseball team this year would be an understatement. The talented duo led the Eagles in virtually every offensive category.

Greenbrier baseball's unexpected ride   05/29/13 - 12:07am

I have a message for the Greenbrier High School baseball team: Hold your heads high; you gave all of us a fun ride over the last few weeks.

Sure, it stings to come so close to a state title and lose. I understand that. It should hurt. If it didn’t hurt, teams would not begin each February with a state crown as their ultimate goal. This might sound obnoxious, but for most of those teams, it is just talk. It is what coaches say to try and motivate their teams. In Columbia County, and especially at Greenbrier, anything less than a state championship is tough to stomach.

Belcher continues to shine for USC   05/22/13 - 12:29am

The University of South Carolina’s baseball team wrapped up its regular season over the weekend, dropping two of three to Mississippi State. The Gamecocks are now 39-16 as they head into the SEC Tournament. The 2013 South Carolina squad might not be as talented as the teams that have claimed two national titles and a national runner-up finish over the last three seasons.

Greenbrier 'road warriors' meet Whitewater   05/19/13 - 12:05am

Greenbrier High School will face Whitewater High Monday in the Class AAAAA baseball semifinals. If this story sounds familiar, that’s because the same two teams met last season. A year ago, Greenbrier won the three-game series, advancing to play Loganville in the state championship series.

Whitewater is doing something similar to what Greenbrier did a decade before. In 1996-97, Greenbrier opened its doors and became a baseball power. Whitewater, in Fayetteville, Ga., opened in 2003 for freshmen, but began competing in the GHSA in sports during the 2006-07 school year.

Norlander improves on PGA tour   05/08/13 - 12:15am

To say Henrik Norlander’s rookie season on the PGA tour was a struggle would have been a big understatement two weeks ago. The big kid from Sweden had earned just $63,000 and was not even in the Top 180 on the PGA tour’s Money List. He had missed the cut in four of those nine events, and when he did make the cut, it seemed he was just narrowly cracking the Top 70 to be around for the weekend.

No. 1 USC-A loaded with county talent   05/05/13 - 12:04am

The USC Aiken Pacers have had a solid baseball program for quite some time, but this year’s squad is reaching incredible milestones.

First, the Pacers recently locked up the Peach Belt Conference regular season title. USC Aiken finished the regular season 42-8 overall and 24-6 in Peach Belt play. To win 24 games in the PBAC is amazing, because the conference is regarded as one of the top baseball leagues in America.

Sigrist will be in good hands at Oglethorpe   05/01/13 - 12:00am

I was very happy to hear that Greenbrier High School forward Connor Sigrist had signed a scholarship at Oglethorpe University.

First, I am always glad to see local athletes get a chance to play at the next level. I also feel Sigrist has only scratched the surface of the player he can be. I also know he will be playing for a coach who will give him a chance to tap into his tremendous potential.

Harlem golf team finds success   04/28/13 - 12:04am

In the 1970s and ’80s, an incredible baseball tradition was built in Harlem. The Bulldogs won seven state championships between 1974 and 1986 and, while they have not claimed another title since, they can be counted on for 20-25 wins and a trip to the state playoffs. Yes, Harlem is very proud of its tremendous baseball program.
